Fresh. Seasonal. Local. Organic.
Who we are
SmallPatch-Smoko is a small-scale market garden growing fresh produce and flowers using organic and regenerative practices on the banks of the Upper Ovens River, in Smoko, Victoria.
-
We grow for flavour and colour. Our vegetables, herbs, potatoes, berries, and flowers are cultivated using organic practices. We produce high-quality fresh food without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides, while remaining affordable to a broad range of customers.
-
Our small farm is committed to sustainable living, organic, and regenerative practices. By supplying our produce to the community, we aim to foster a deeper connection between the food we eat, the land it grows in, and the local community. We aim to promote local and seasonal eating and make our farm not just a source of food and flowers, but a space that celebrates flavour, colour, transparency, honesty, and sustainability.
-
What is the purpose of food? Is it primarily a commodity optimized for transport and storage, or a sensory and nutritional experience enjoyed at its peak?
Conventional agriculture has long prioritized yield and transportability as its primary metrics of success. This focus often comes at the expense of flavour and complex aromas.
In contrast, on our farm, we are on a quest for flavour. We are trying varieties of vegetables different from the commercial ones to select for robust flavour profiles, and cultivating them under conditions that enhance their sensory characteristics.
-
Why should we eat local produce in tune with the seasons?
Better flavour and texture. Vegetables picked at peak ripeness usually taste sweeter, crisper, and are more vibrant than off-season produce that travels long distances to reach our table.
Reduced environmental impact. Local, in season produce usually has fewer food miles and requires less energy for storage, cooling, and transport.
Supports local farmers and communities.
Greater variety and culinary inspiration. Following the seasons encourages us to try new foods and recipes, expanding our cooking repertoire.
